The ESS is a self–administered questionnaire with 8 questions. Respondents are asked to rate their usual chances of daytime sleepiness while engaged in 8 different activities.

The questionnaire takes no more than 2 to 3 minutes to answer and is available in several different languages. A license is needed to download and use the ESS, but these are free of charge for non–commercial activity.

Mapi Research Trust is the agent for the ESS. The tool can be accessed from their website, which includes details of requirements for a license to use it, and information about the different translations. All queries can be directed to Mapi through their website.
