Understanding the role of gut hormones in dementia

Researchers at Swansea University are interested in understanding the link between a stomach hormone called ghrelin and memory problems in conditions such as Parkinson’s, Parkinson’s dementia, Alzheimer’s and Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

The research aims to find out whether ghrelin can be used to help diagnose dementia. 

Who

All participants must be over the age of 60, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30, and be from the following groups: 
• 10 people with Parkinson’s
• 10 people with Parkinson’s dementia
• 10 people with Alzheimer’s Disease
• 10 people with Dementia with Lewy Bodies
 10 people without any of the above 4 conditions

All participants must be living in South and Southwest Wales and be happy to travel to the research site in Swansea.

What

An initial telephone conversation will be arranged to determine your eligibility to participate. If eligible you will be invited to attend 2 study visits at the Joint Clinical Research Facility in Swansea. 

At the first visit you will be asked to complete surveys to understand your mental processes and movement. This visit will last 1 hour. 

At the second visit you will be asked to come to the research centre before breakfast and certain medications (if appropriate). Small blood samples will be collected from you on arrival and at regular intervals following a breakfast provided by the research team. This visit will last 3.5 hours. 

Travel costs (e.g taxi or petrol) to the study centre will be reimbursed.
