Could looking at the breakdown of caffeine in the body help us to identify Parkinson’s?
Researchers at Betsi Cadwaladr University are investigating differences in the breakdown of caffeine for people with Parkinson’s and people without Parkinson’s. They also want to investigate if differences in the absorption of caffeine into the body are related to the severity of Parkinson’s symptoms.
100 people with Parkinson’s
• 50 people who are taking medication for their condition
• 50 people who are not taking medication for their condition
100 people without Parkinson’s
• who don’t have any pre-existing neurological conditions
Attending 5 visits at your closest study hospital in Denbighshire or Wrexham.
• The visits will take place over an 18-month period
• The length of the visits will vary between 15 and 60 minutes
• They will involve giving blood and urine samples
• You will also be asked to complete a weekly diary of your caffeine consumption in the week leading up to each visit.
