Nicky is a teacher from Cheshire and was diagnosed with Parkinson's in January 2020, just before the pandemic.
"I was left to cope with this diagnosis pretty much on my own. Lockdown meant that I couldn't get answers, and I wondered 'why me?'"
Nicky accessed Parkinson's UK services and is now involved in many brilliant ways. From joining a research group, to going to events and joining a group to help with physical activity.
"Parkinson's UK really was my lifeline during this time. I found advice about many things, including what to tell the DVLA. The helpline advisers were brilliant. I have met some lovely people through the Parkinson's UK community who have supported me. I'm now a research champion. I am even planning to jump out of a plane this year!"
Nicky remains positive and doesn't let her Parkinson's define her.
"I'm still the same primary school teacher, the mum my children grew up with, the wife my husband knows and the nanny my grandchildren know. I'm still the same me that my friends and family know and love. I might be a little bit slower now but I was never Usain Bolt to begin with!"
