Is low blood pressure an early sign of Parkinson’s?

Researchers want to understand the connection between low blood pressure and Parkinson’s. By monitoring people with low blood pressure over time, they hope to identify who may be at risk of developing Parkinson’s.

Who

50 people without Parkinson’s who are 50 to 80 years old who have:

• a diagnosis of postural hypotension or pure autonomic failure 

• or experience frequent episodes of dizziness after standing up which end after sitting

• or take medicine for low blood pressure such as midodrine or fludrocortisone.

And access to a laptop or computer.

What

Recording blood pressure readings at home may be required to confirm you are eligible. Blood pressure devices will be provided.

Completing a 30 minute online survey through the Predict-PD website

Completing a smell test sent by post

3 assessments over the 2 year study to be completed online, at home and  at an optional 1.5 hour in person visit in London for:

• memory and movement tests

• a bladder scan

• a blood sample 

• an optional skin sample.

Travel costs will be reimbursed for in-person visits.
