The ESS is a self–administered questionnaire with 8 questions. Respondents are asked to rate their usual chances of daytime sleepiness while engaged in 8 different activities.

The questionnaire takes no more than 2–3 minutes to answer and is available in many different languages.

A license is needed to download and use the ESS, but these are free of charge for non–commercial activity.
