Lincolnshire Parkinson’s nurses awarded prestigious Queen’s Nurse title

Thousands of community nurses apply for the Queen’s Nurse award but only 20 are awarded annually. Impressively, this year 2 of these nurses have come from the same team at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust.

Parkinson’s nurse specialists Amy Cheevers and Holly Musgrave have received the Queen’s Nurse honour in recognition of their commitment to excellent patient care for people with Parkinson’s. They've consistently gone above and beyond for their patients and demonstrated a continuing passion and enthusiasm for nursing.

Together they make a formidable team with a proactive and forward-thinking approach and many years of experience between them. Amy has been a nurse for 19 years with 9 of these in Parkinson’s and Holly has been a nurse for over 12 years specialising in Parkinson’s for the last 3. With a palliative care background, Holly has been instrumental as the link nurse ensuring palliative care plans are in place for Parkinson’s patients when required.

Awarded by the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI), the honour of becoming a Queen’s Nurse isn’t a reward for length of service, but an acknowledgement of a very exceptional individual contribution to patient care and the nursing profession. This award recognises Amy and Holly's impact in implementing new initiatives and ways of working to improve patient outcomes in Lincolnshire, supported by feedback from patients and their peers. Just some of their innovations are:

  • the introduction of a clozapine service following the findings of their service's participation in the UK Parkinson’s Audit

  • development of a virtual ward for Parkinson’s patients

  • use of digital monitoring tools.

Speaking of what receiving the award felt like, Amy shared:

‘’I feel overwhelmed about being awarded the title and also a huge sense of pride. I applied for the Queen’s Nurse title as I saw this as an opportunity to showcase what I am truly passionate about, providing equitable access to services, high standards of patient centred care and supporting the development of others through my continuation of learning and leadership.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to network within the wider Queen’s Nurse community and highlight the amazing work and difference that I have made to those people impacted by Parkinson’s in Lincolnshire.’’

We look forward to seeing how the new title will help the development of Amy and Holly’s roles and how it may inspire other Parkinson’s nurses to pursue the Queen's Nurse opportunity in the coming years.
