Consensus statement for the continuation of Parkinson's medicines in hospitals: resource update

Anne Ferret's mother was subjected to an extended stay in hospital because her Parkinson's medication wasn't managed well while there. This was just one of many similar cases, so in 2017 the Excellence Network came together to develop a consensus statement and tools to support the development of local guidance, ensuring the timely delivery of Parkinson’s medication to people in hospital settings. 

Anne used her and her mother's experience to contribute to the statement's development in a group led by Paul Worth, Consultant Neurologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and former East of England Excellence Network Lead.

Resource update

We know there are still issues with the timely provision of Parkinson's medications in hospitals for many patients, and so, alongside our Time Critical Medication programme, we've updated the consensus statement. Find out more about the Time Critical Medication programme and resources.

The updated resource is expected to be of interest to policy makers as well as staff working in departments where people with Parkinson’s may present or be admitted in an emergency. It provides guidance for health professionals managing people with Parkinson's in hospitals, along with practical tools and templates for the development of prescribing and administration guidelines.
