Sinemet packaging changes

Since February 2022 Sinemet packaging has been changing, but the medication remains the same.

Update: this story was updated on 24 August 2022, after an update on Sinemet packaging changes.

This story was originally published in September 2021.

MSD, who manufacture and distribute the Parkinson's drug Sinemet, formed a new spin-off company called Organon Pharma (UK) Limited in June 2021.

Some medicines previously supplied by MSD will now be supplied by Organon, including all Sinemet products.

The company started to change the packaging for Sinemet products from February 2022, to reflect this new company name.

We've worked with the company to share answers to some questions you may have.

When will the changes happen?

The packaging of all Sinemet products supplied by Organon in the UK has been changing to reflect the new company name and has included a change in the logo and name on the carton from MSD to Organon. This part of the changes is complete.

Further changes to the address on the packaging for all strengths of Sinemet will follow to reflect the address of Organon Pharma UK.

Why are the changes happening?

As supplies of the MSD-produced Sinemet have depleted, Organon products have replaced them. The packaging included a change in the company name and logo on the medication carton.

It also wanted to reassure people who take the medication that it is still the same, but the packaging might look a little different.

How are the changes being communicated?

Organon has had these changes approved by the regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, to ensure it meets all of its requirements.

The company has shared this information with us, so we can inform the Parkinson's community.

It is also communicating with the relevant professional bodies, so they are aware of this change too.

Have the tablets changed?

Organon has confirmed there will be no changes to the ingredients or the look of any Sinemet tablets.

What happens if the medication doesn't work?

If you experience any reactions to your medication please report them using the Yellow Card website.

You should also report your reaction to Organon Pharma (UK) on 020 8159 3593.

My medicines already have Organon on the packaging, why is this?

The timing of the changes in packaging may vary between countries.

If your pharmacy has imported the medicine from another country, you may already see that it says Organon on the packaging.

If you have any queries about imported (non-UK) products, get in touch with the company that distributes the medication identified on the packaging.

Will this change impact the supply of Sinemet?

Organon has reassured us that there are no supply issues with any of its products.

It will continue to monitor their medicine supply chains carefully and will keep us informed of any future issues.

We'll then share any relevant information with people with Parkinson's, carers, professionals and our staff.
