Preparing to meet your ICB or MP

Meeting your integrated care board (ICB) or MP is a great way to express your concerns and make sure the needs of people with Parkinson’s are being considered. Our tips will help make you make the most out of your meeting.

Plan your journey

Before the meeting, check where it's being held, how you'll get there and where you can park. Try to get there early, but if you're running late, call ahead and let them know.

Introduce yourself

When you get into the meeting, the person, or people, you're speaking to might have a lot of appointments that day. Politely let them know who you are and what you've contacted them about. You may also want to ask how much time you have to speak about your issue.

Share your story

Personal stories are authentic and can create strong connections. They put a face to an issue and help bring a problem to life. The person you're talking to may even relate to your story, so don't be afraid to share your connection to the issues you've raised.

If you aren’t personally affected by this issue, then share other relevant stories from people with Parkinson’s in your local area. Our local campaigns team can help you with this.

Know your topic

Are there key stats that might support your story or your cause? It’s OK to have notes if you need them. Any details about the local area, like how many people have Parkinson’s or, average waiting times would be helpful to your cause.

Be confident and clear

You’ve already done the hard part and secured the meeting, so be confident. Come knowing what you want to get out of the conversation and don’t assume they’re going to say no. Remember, if you don’t ask, you won’t get!

Make sure they understand what you’re asking for

During your conversation, it’s OK to pause and check that they understand what you’re talking about. They may already have a good understanding of the issues you’re raising. Plus, checking in makes sure they’re listening too!

Get in touch afterwards

At the end of your meeting, summarise any agreed actions and let them know that you’ll follow up with them later. Afterwards, send them an email or letter recapping what you discussed and what was agreed.
