Make a gift to our Nurse Appeal
Give today, and help thousands more people get the specialist Parkinson's care they urgently need. Together we can fund great care, everywhere.
Every person with Parkinson’s should get specialist healthcare. It's a lifeline for those who do get it. But thousands don't. They can't access a Parkinson's nurse or physiotherapist to get the support they need.
But with your help, we can close the gap. We want to fund more nurses, more allied health professionals, clinical fellowships and training. Helping thousands more people to manage their symptoms better, reduce their stress, and live better with Parkinson’s.
Louise is a Parkinson's nurse in Bridgend and has been in the role for over 20 years.
Louise says:
"When a patient doesn’t have access to a Parkinson’s nurse, it often means neither they nor their family fully understand the condition or the variety of symptoms. They won’t necessarily have contact with other allied health professionals either, resulting in higher use of other healthcare resources, such as GPs or emergency departments. But these services aren’t specialised to understand and manage Parkinson’s symptoms."
Overstretched services
There are huge pressures on the health services right now and Parkinson’s services are stretched. We’ve heard from Parkinson’s nurses that they don’t feel able to properly support the people that contact them and many have hundreds more patients than they should have. There are very few allied health professionals who currently specialise in Parkinson’s, so many people miss out.
But people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones can’t wait for great care. Too many people are already missing out on the specialist care they need, and 18,000 people are being diagnosed each year.

With the right funding, great care could be available whenever and wherever it’s needed.
Parkinson's nurses are trained specialists with a deep understanding of the condition and are a continuous point of contact for people with Parkinson’s.
They help manage medication and symptoms and offer information and support. They reduce anxiety around Parkinson’s and signpost to other sources of support.
Access to a Parkinson's nurse can make a huge difference to the lives of people with Parkinson's and their families.
Everyone experiences Parkinson's differently. Symptoms can range from tremor and movement problems to anxiety and depression, and everyone needs a team of specialists to provide the right care.
Allied health professionals can include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, pharmacists or mental health professionals. They work together with Parkinson's nurses and doctors to provide the treatments and therapies that each individual needs.
Great care is tailored to each person. Coordinated by a Parkinson's nurse or doctor, with expert specialists providing joined up support for specific symptoms. Great care helps people with Parkinson’s and their families to live better.
Your gifts will fund incredible Parkinson’s nurses like Louise.
"Parkinson’s nurses and allied health professionals improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s and allow them to remain independent for longer, reducing the need for intervention from other healthcare areas."
