ExPRESS Study: Improving early diagnosis and treatment of parkinsonism and related conditions
Parkinsonism is an umbrella term used to cover a range of conditions that share similar symptoms to Parkinson's. Currently, there isn’t a simple way to accurately diagnose these conditions.
Researchers want to improve this by tracking changes in people with these conditions.
500 people living in the UK who:
• have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s or a similar condition, including Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Cortico-Basal Syndrome (CBS) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)
• or are experiencing symptoms that may suggest Parkinson’s or a similar condition. Read about the symptoms associated with Parkinsonism.
You’ll be invited to your nearest study centre for a 2 to 3 hour visit where you’ll:
• give consent and donate a blood sample, which will be assessed for markers that may help identify Parkinsonism
• complete questionnaires and have a neurological examination, as well other optional assessments, including a skin biopsy, urine sample, and a lumbar puncture. Find out more about lumbar puncture in this Michael J. Fox Foundation video.
You’ll be invited to repeat these assessments after 1 year.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to £25.
For more information, please read the participant information sheet.
How you can take part
The first step is to contact the study coordinator, who will give you more information about the study and whether it's right for you.
Get in touch with the study team: If you'd prefer to speak on the phone, you can call the team on 07825 076 394. Don't worry if we aren't at our desks, just leave a voicemail with your details, and we’ll call you back for a friendly chat.
Check your location: See the list of research sites. There are research sites across England and Wales.
The deadline for taking part in this research is 31 December 2030.
