Developing a new language therapy to support communication in people with Parkinson's
Many people with Parkinson's find it difficult to take part in conversations. This includes language skills, like finding words when talking, but currently there is no treatment for this. Researchers are creating a new therapy to help manage these problems.
10 people with Parkinson's who:
• Feel that Parkinson's is making it harder to take part in everyday conversations
• Have language difficulties, such as finding words
• Have a regular conversation partner who is happy to get involved in the therapy
• Have no communication problems unrelated to Parkinson's
• Are fluent in English
Taking part for 4 months, which will involve:
• 3 assessments of your language skills, each assessment will take up to 2 hours
• 1 hour online therapy sessions over Microsoft Teams every week with a speech and language therapist for 6 weeks
• Completing therapy homework for 30 minutes per week
• A 30 minute closing interview about your communication difficulties and experience taking part
You can use a computer or tablet to join the online therapy. The research team will provide training, technical support, and equipment like a tablet where needed.
Therapy materials and home exercises will be available electronically or in print.
For more information, please read the participant information sheet.
