Support the biggest UK clinical trial

EJS ACT-PD is the largest Parkinson's clinical trial in the UK to date. Around 1,600 people with Parkinson's will be taking part in this trial, at over 40 research sites across the UK. We believe EJS ACT-PD could help us find new treatments to stop or slow Parkinson's, sooner. That's why many experts have come together to drive it forward.

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with Parkinson's every 20 minutes. By 2050, the number of people living with the condition worldwide is expected to double to 25 million.

Current treatments manage symptoms but cannot stop or slow Parkinson's progression. EJS ACT-PD aims to change that.

This is big: EJS-ACT PD

Your support can help accelerate the biggest ever clinical trial for Parkinson's and help us find better treatments, sooner.

This trial is groundbreaking:

  • EJS ACT-PD is a new style of trial, called multi-arm, multi-stage (MAMS). This means that, for the first time in Parkinson's research, multiple treatments can be tested at the same time, giving us more answers quickly and efficiently
  • We can check early on to see if treatments appear to be working. If they aren't, they can be removed from the trial, and new ones can be added
  • The drugs currently being tested in EJS ACT-PD are in phase 3 of clinical testing, the final hurdle before a treatment can be approved for use
  • The platform trial approach has been used before for other conditions including Multiple Sclerosis and prostate cancer. It has led to finding new combinations of treatments that improve the overall survival rate. Now, we're using this approach for Parkinson's.

Testing promising treatments

The trial launched with two treatments, telmisartan and terazosin. Both have shown promising signs in laboratory research and early clinical testing that they could slow Parkinson's progression.

Participants take either a treatment or a placebo alongside their usual medication and support.

Now, a third treatment, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), is being added to the trial. Already used to treat liver disease, UDCA showed potential in research funded by us and led by Professor Heather Mortiboys at the University of Sheffield.

Big or small, your contribution could change a life

Every donation is an investment into a future where Parkinson's can be stopped or slowed, helping us to continue testing, learning, and developing the treatments that will change lives.

Together, we can give people living with Parkinson's hope for a brighter future.

One year on from the studies launch, we can share important updates on the trials progress, testing multiple therapies to slow, or even stop Parkinson's from getting worse.
