How is Parkinson's affected by gut microorganisms?
Researchers are exploring how gut microorganisms connect to Parkinson's symptoms. They're comparing the production of methane gas in people with Parkinson's and REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder. This will help them understand changes in the gut in Parkinson's.
40 people with REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD) who:
• Have not been diagnosed with Parkinson's
• Are over 55
Unfortunately, people with immune or inflammatory conditions like diabetes are unable to take part.
2 visits over 18 months, either at the research clinic in Cambridge or in your home.
Visit 1 will take up to 2 hours and involve:
• A breath test after fasting the night before and a test of how long food takes to travel through your gut
• Completing surveys and assessments of your movement and thinking symptoms
• Giving a blood and stool sample
18 months later, visit 2 will involve the same assessments.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to £50.
