Improving walking and balance using augmented reality

Researchers at Robert Gordon University want to explore whether augmented reality (AR) exercises can improve walking and balance in Parkinson’s.

They're testing portable AR glasses developed by a therapeutics company called Strolll, which allow the wearer to interact with digital games and exercises.

Who

60 people with Parkinson’s who:

• Live within NHS Grampian in Scotland. Find out if you’re covered by this trust on NHS 24.

• Experience freezing when walking

• Can walk further than 100m with or without a walking aid

• Have been taking a stable dose of Parkinson's medication for 3 weeks before starting the research

• And have access to a laptop or tablet

What

A 30 minute screening call, online or over the phone, with the lead researcher.

A 1 hour home visit by a physiotherapist to take measurements of your walking and balance.

You will then be randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups:

• Group 1: Will receive a 30 minute home exercise programme, to complete 4 times a week for 6 weeks.

• Groups 2, 3 and 4: Will use AR glasses for 30 minutes, 2, 4 or 6 times a week, for 6 weeks.

Once assigned to a group, a physiotherapist will assess your walking and balance at home. They will develop a personalised exercise programme for you based on this assessment.

After following the programme for 6 weeks, a physiotherapist will take measurements of your walking and balance in your home. This will be repeated 12 weeks later.

Taking part in a 1 hour interview online or over the phone with the researchers to share your experience.
