Improving balance through movement and brain training

Many people with Parkinson’s experience problems with balance. This can lead to falls and a loss of confidence.

Researchers at the University of Leicester are exploring whether an exercise game that uses virtual reality could improve balance and mobility.

Who

12 people with Parkinson’s, who:

• who have experienced at least 1 fall in the past year

• experience freezing of gait

• and don’t currently exercise 3 times a week

Unfortunately, those diagnosed with any other neurological conditions, such as dementia, or who have had deep brain stimulation, are unable to take part.

What

Attending a 30 minute visit at De Montfort University in Leicester to check you can take part.

Completing 30 sessions at the University of Leicester using the virtual reality exercise game over 12 weeks.

The 30 minute sessions will involve:

• Taking measurements of your balance

• Taking part in an electroencephalogram (EEG), which involves wearing small sensors on your head to measure electrical activity in your brain. You will either receive accurate feedback from the EEG or sham feedback while playing the game.

• Wearing a virtual reality headset and playing the exercise game

• You can take a break at any time

After 12 weeks you will be invited to 3 further, 45-minute follow up visits which will involve:

• Taking measurements of your balance and walking

• And completing questionnaires

You may also take part in an optional 1 hour interview about your experience taking part.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

For more information, please read the participant information sheet.
