Understanding pain in Parkinson’s

Many people with Parkinson’s experience ongoing pain. The reasons for this pain aren't fully understood. A PhD student wants to find out what might cause this pain.

Who

60 people with Parkinson's living in the UK who:

• experience chronic pain (pain is present more days than not for at least 3 months)

• have been taking a stable dose of Parkinson's or pain medication for 28 days before starting the research

• and can access the internet

Unfortunately, people who are experiencing hallucinations or delusions are unable to take part.

What

A 15 minute screening call with the researcher.

Visiting the research site in London for 2 hours, where you’ll:

• Complete surveys about your pain

• Take part in sensory tests to measure your response to temperature, touch, pressure and vibration. You can stop the tests at any time.

For the following 2 weeks, you’ll be asked to:

• Use an app on a smartphone at home to complete 3 surveys every day

• The surveys will ask about your pain and take 5 minutes to complete

• The research team will help you to download the app, and smartphones can be loaned to those who need one

Some people will be invited to a follow up 2 hour lab visit.

Some people may also be invited to take part in a 45 minute interview about their responses to the daily surveys.

The interview can take place in person, online or over the phone.

Travel expenses and your time will be reimbursed.
