Our bone health resources have been refreshed
Bone health in Parkinson's can still be an overlooked issue. We've updated our bone health resources to include the latest tools and research on this important topic.
Our Better bone health resource page hosts the resources that were outputs from our 2-year Better bone health project:
- assessing bone health in Parkinson's guide
- bone health patient assessment form
- information video from Dr Donald Grosset.
Revised BONE-PARK algorithm
The updates come after the BONE-PARK algorithm was updated in line with the Clinical guideline for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis (National Osteoporosis Guideline Group, 2024).
The project, led by Dr Emily Henderson, University of Bristol, revised the BONE-PARK algorithm to provide current and standardised risk assessment protocols and treatment recommendations for improved bone health management. The resulting BONE-PARK2 algorithm also supports greater awareness and a stronger call to action among multidisciplinary clinicians.
Early assessment is key
Further updates to the resources include the recommendation to assess people with Parkinson's early - ideally within the first year since diagnosis.
This was a major finding of a study outlined in the paper "Early bone health assessment is indicated in Parkinson's: Risk factor analysis in a UK population-based cohort study, for which Dr Grosset was a member of the research team.
Both of the above projects were recipients of one of our Large Project Grants.
New patient-facing resources
The Better bone health resource page also signposts to 2 new collections of information for people with Parkinson's:
- Bone health and Parkinson's
- Women and Parkinson's (containing information on osteoporosis).
