How do our research projects work at Parkinson's UK?

Our research projects are divided into two categories.

Cure
Projects which develop treatments and strategies to slow, stop, reverse or prevent Parkinson’s

Improve Life
Projects which develop treatments to improve symptoms and quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s.

Read on to find out more about the kind of research projects happening at Parkinson’s UK today.

Cure

Understanding cell recycling in Parkinson’s - a protein called alpha-synuclein accumulates in the brains of people with Parkinson's. This project aims to discover if boosting the cell’s own recycling system can protect brain cells against this build up.

Understanding Parkinson’s Progression - this is one of several studies observing people with Parkinson’s over time to help with early symptom prediction, leading to personalised and better treatments.

Improve Life

Developing and testing a well-being app - mental health can be seriously impacted by Parkinson's and affect quality of life. This project aims to develop an app using the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help people cope with any challenges.

Weight shifting training - A common Parkinson's symptom is freezing. This project uses a 'force-plate' to measure balance during a freeze and find ways to deal with it. This information can then be applied to help people feel confident to step from a freeze.
