Support research breakthroughs

You can help fund groundbreaking research where the results won't just be seen in the lab. They'll be seen in life changing breakthroughs for people with Parkinson's.

We can make breakthroughs happen, together.

Vital research is happening at Parkinson's UK. Together, we're working with the brightest minds and funding the best ideas. Together, we're helping to change the lives of people with Parkinson's now and in the future. This is only possible with the support of generous donors like you.

Your generosity will fund research to improve the lives of people living with Parkinson's right now and find new treatments and a cure. Give a gift to researchers today.

Will you give a gift to researchers?

Your donation will help get new treatments to the people that need them, faster.

Find out more about our research

Our research projects are divided into 2 categories: Cure and Improve Life. Cure projects develop treatments and strategies to slow, stop or reverse Parkinson's. Improve Life projects develop treatments to improve symptoms and quality of life for people living with Parkinson's.

Our pioneering research programme is already paving the way towards better treatments and a cure and helping everyone live better with Parkinson's, now. We won't stop because Parkinson's won't stop.

Your donation could support projects like these today

There are so many ways your donation will have a huge impact, and research like this is only possible with your support.

Read on to find out more about just a few research projects happening at Parkinson's UK.

Understanding more about the genetics of Parkinson's

Parkinson's is idiopathic (has no known cause) and 1 in 20 cases are seen to have a genetic link. But if we could understand the genetic changes, this could pave the way not only to correct the genetic changes that cause Parkinson's, but understand more about the condition and help find a treatment for everyone.

Improving balance and preventing falls

People with Parkinson's have told us that balance problems are one of the top symptoms they want us to address. Dr Qadeer Arshad at the University of Leicester, has developed a virtual environment game to engage participants in weight shifting, which is known to improve balance. This research could help introduce new exercise-based therapies to improve balance and prevent falls.

Deepening understanding of Parkinson's dementia

We know sticky clumps of alpha-synuclein play a role in Parkinson's. This research will look further into how they could lead to the development of Parkinson's dementia and how different shapes and sizes of clumps are most relevant. This could help design targeted treatments to prevent the clumps from damaging cells. And potentially leading to a blood-based diagnosis tool to monitor progression.

Increasing mental health support

There are not enough qualified professionals delivering Parkinson's specialist mental health support. Dr Jennifer Foley at UCL is developing a treatment programme accessible to non-experts in the NHS. This means that people with Parkinson's can receive tailored and impactful mental health support. No matter where they live.

These are just some examples of the incredible research happening right now at Parkinson's UK. Find out more about our research projects. Projects don't happen in isolation, each project builds on ones that have come before, adding to previous findings and sparking new ideas.

Every donation counts and will help us continue to fund vital research, and ultimately bring us closer to a future free of Parkinson's. Your gift could fund the next breakthrough.
