Help fund an app to treat the symptoms that no-one can see.

90% of people with Parkinson’s will experience non-motor symptoms. We’re funding the development of an app which can track, monitor and help treat non-motor symptoms at home.

Sue is a lead volunteer at Parkinson's UK and is a care partner for her husband John, who has Parkinson’s. They are both co-applicants in the trial. She, and others, tell us that motor symptoms (such as tremors) are given more attention than non-motor symptoms (such as insomnia, depression and constipation), which are often overlooked. But these have a significant impact on their lives.

NMS Assist is a drug free treatment that will provide information, guides and self-help videos. It will also enable people to track and monitor their symptoms. The app will recognise patterns and start to proactively recommend support and changes to help improve the mental and physical health of people living with Parkinson’s.

What else will NMS Assist do?

Developed in collaboration with people with Parkinson’s, NMS Assist will enable people to self-manage their individual symptoms.

Where it is adopted as a digital tool by Health Authorities, it will also:

  • give medical teams access to detailed and precise information about what’s actually happening, so they can suggest appropriate next steps.
  • allow people with Parkinson’s to request contact with healthcare professionals, who can monitor and flag worrying symptoms.

The app has been in development for 4 years and we’re now at the final testing phase before this tool can be made available to everyone.

In this testing phase, 60 people with Parkinson’s, their care partners and the medical practitioners involved in their care, will use the app for 12 months. Assessments of their non-motor symptoms will be taken in visits at the start of the trial, at 6 and 12 months.

The researchers will monitor how people use the app and how their non-motor symptoms have improved as a result.

If the trial is successful, the app will be available to download for free on devices such as phones and tablets.

“The ability to independently, track and receive advice about the non-motor symptoms will save hours of wondering, worrying and waiting for contact with the medical teams involved.”
