Staying active this winter
You might not feel like getting outside much right now, but there are plenty of ways to make sure you keep moving this winter.
Being active is important for all of us, but especially for people with Parkinson’s. We recommend 2.5 hours a week.
Physical activity can:
- strengthen your bones and muscles
- improve your posture
- boost your mood and lessen anxiety
- help you manage movement symptoms like tremor.
Find a group near you
Having something in your diary, or booking a class at a set time, can help you stick to healthy exercise habits. Our local support tool lists hundreds of exercise and wellbeing clubs and classes, including:
- walking football
- yoga
- Bat and Chat (pickleball and table tennis)
- Move and Shout (circuit training and voice strengthening exercises).
Join a gym
- Everyone Active manages 230 gyms across England, Scotland and Wales, and offers free membership for people with Parkinson’s, plus a carer or supporter.
- PureGym offers free 12 month off-peak membership at their 400 gyms across the UK for people with Parkinson’s and a friend or partner. Email [email protected] to find out more.

Stay motivated - 4 tips to try
- Make it easy to start, and as hard as possible to avoid, being active - put your clothes out the night before, book a regular class, or set up your equipment in advance.
- Find support - exercising with someone else helps you stay motivated. Friends and partners are often welcome to join classes for free.
- Reward yourself - celebrate finishing an activity, hitting a goal, or doing something you might have skipped.
- Do something you enjoy - there’s no perfect activity. Fun activities are easier to stick with, and any movement is better than none.
