Our research projects are divided into two categories:

  • Cure’ projects, which develop treatments and strategies to slow, stop or reverse Parkinson’s.

  • 'Improve life’ projects, which develop treatments to improve symptoms and quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s.

Your donation could support projects like these today.

Your donation will have a huge impact. Research like this is only possible with your support. Read on to find out more about just a few research projects happening at Parkinson’s UK.

Cure

Understanding more about the genetics of Parkinson’s

1 in 20 cases of Parkinson’s have a genetic link. But if we could understand the genetic changes, we could understand more about the condition as a whole and find a treatment for everyone.

Deepening understanding of Parkinson’s dementia

We know sticky clumps of a protein called alpha-synuclein play a role in Parkinson’s. This research is looking into how they could lead to the development of Parkinson’s dementia and the impact of different shapes and sizes of clumps. This could help design targeted treatments to prevent the clumps damaging cells.

Improve life

Improving balance and preventing falls

People with Parkinson’s have told us that problems with balance and falls are one of the top symptoms they want to address. Researchers have developed a virtual game to engage participants in weight shifting, which is known to improve balance. This could lead to a new exercise-based therapy to improve balance and prevent falls.

Increasing mental health support

There are currently not enough qualified professionals delivering Parkinson’s specialist mental health support. By developing a Parkinson's-specific treatment programme, accessible to non-experts in the NHS, tailored and impactful mental health support could be available, no matter where people live.

Help fund the future of Parkinson’s research

The festive period can be a stressful time for people living with Parkinson’s, and those who love them. But Parkinson’s doesn’t stop for Christmas, so neither will we.

Your gift could fund the next breakthrough. Give a gift to researchers today.
