Parkinson's UK awards new physical activity grant for non-contact boxing

Parkinson's UK has awarded a new physical activity grant to Rock Steady Boxing. The grant will help train up to 10 new boxing coaches in high intensity, non-contact boxing for the Parkinson's community.

As part of our physical activity grants programme, we have agreed to extend our partnership with Rock Steady Boxing.

Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) is already benefitting from our physical activity grants programme. With the latest round of grants, there will be opportunities for even more Parkinson’s approved RSB boxing coaches across the UK.

Based in the United States, Rock Steady Boxing offers international affiliate training programmes for boxing coaches and trainers to support people living with the condition.

Our grants programme will allow up to 10 new affiliate coaches to lead boxing sessions across the UK under the RSB banner. Members of the Parkinson’s community are already benefiting from high intensity, non-contact boxing sessions at Rock Steady Boxing sites in Glasgow and Widnes.

The new coaching courses can be purchased with a discount code which is available for anyone who joins the programme. The training includes 10 hours of online learning and a 2 day in-person session at RSB Widnes. The face-to-face training will take place in March 2023.

Physical activity can help people living with Parkinson’s to manage their symptoms and improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Non-contact boxing can be a great way for people living with the condition to build up a sweat in a fun and social atmosphere.

Tim Morton, Physical Activity Programme Manager for Parkinson’s UK, said:

"We are delighted to be in partnership with Rock Steady Boxing. They offer the absolute gold standard in equipping providers to become excellent boxing coaches, equipped with an understanding of Parkinson’s and helping people with the condition understand the benefits of being physically active."

Ryan Cotton, Chief Executive Officer at Rock Steady Boxing, said:

"We are excited to be collaborating with Parkinson’s UK and to bring our training to more people across the country. Current evidence from the Parkinson’s community supports regular, vigorous activity to help manage symptoms and Rock Steady Boxing is a great way to deliver life-changing physical activities."
