Support the Parkinson's UK Brain Bank

The Parkinson's UK Brain Bank was established in 1984 at Imperial College London. It's the only brain bank that is dedicated to research in Parkinson's.

About the Brain Bank

Since the Brain Bank was established it has supplied tissue samples to over 500 research projects across the globe. In addition to this the Brain Bank can now provide genetic information about the tissue, which assists researchers in their quest to find out what may cause the condition.

Brain Bank achievements have included researchers observing clumps of protein, called alpha-synuclein, in the brains of people with Parkinson's. This helped shape studies of today, where one research focus is on how to remove this protein to protect the brain cells.

Another study observed tissue from people who had received deep brain stimulation (DBS) which revealed an increase in the number and size of mitochondria, the energy producing centre of the cells. This key insight gives a better understanding of how treatments such as DBS might be helping improve Parkinson's symptoms.

These are just 2 examples of how the Brain Bank is instrumental in continuing to develop vital research into Parkinson's. And there's no stopping us now.

The ultimate goal is to provide a future free from Parkinson's.

You can help fund the Parkinson's UK Brain Bank

It currently costs around £1,680 per day to run the Brain Bank. With the cost of living increase we anticipate this figure will rise in the coming months.

Scientists at the Brain Bank continue to power research into uncovering new clues and potential treatments to improve life for people with Parkinson's and those who love and care for them.

Every week the Parkinson's UK Brain Bank is grateful to receive (on average) 3 brains that have been pledged to research.  Every one received is an opportunity to learn more about Parkinson's. Every financial donation received funds this vital work. Together they are helping our researchers get another step closer to the next breakthrough.
