Current Research

Test tubesResearchers are working hard to increase our understanding of Parkinson’s disease. This research is focussing on:

What causes the condition
Extensive research being carried out into both genetic and environmental factors involved in its development.

Who gets Parkinson’s
The cause(s) of Parkinson’s are currently unknown. However researchers believe that by understanding who is more likely to develop the condition we are better able to prevent it.

Improved treatment
A significant amount of research is being carried out to develop new and improved drug therapies (including better ways of delivering the drugs) to help manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Research is also establishing the benefits of non-drug therapies including:

  • complementary therapies
  • diet, food and antioxidants
  • surgery
  • stem cell therapies
  • gene therapy, cell therapy and Xenografts

There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s and it is unlikely that a single cure will be found. However, learning more about these areas will lead to improved treatments and possible cures for specific aspects or symptoms of the condition.

A significant focus for the Society is also to support research that improves the care and support of people with Parkinson’s, with the ultimate aim of improving the lives of people affected by the condition.
