All Party Parliamentary Group for Parkinson's Disease
The All Party Parliamentary Group for
Parkinson's Disease (APPG) is a cross-party group of MPs and Peers
with an interest in Parkinson's.
The group aims to raise awareness of the condition amongst
parliamentarians, to influence legislation and policy makers in
order to improve the lives of people affected.
Parkinson's UK Parliamentary Reception
We presented our Fair Care for
Parkinson's petition, signed by over 14,000 people, to the
Government at a parliamentary reception event attended by Care
Services Minister, Paul Burstow on 17 November 2010.
APPG officers
Chair
Baroness Gale (Labour)
Baroness Gale has been Chair of the APPG since it was
established in 2006 and played a key role in the played a key role
in the 2009 APPG Inquiry. She
consistently raises Parkinson's issues in Parliament.
Baroness Gale has been a member of the House of Lords since
1999. She is also a member of the Women's National Commission. She
previously served as General Secretary of the Welsh Labour Party
and is an active trade unionist.
Vice Chairs
Steve Brine MP (Conservative)
Steve is the newly elected MP for Winchester. He has already
raised Parkinson's issues with ministers and met members of his
local Parkinson's UK branch in the House of Commons.
Health is one of Steve's key priorities and he campaigns
passionately for services in his constituency.
Before entering Parliament, Steve worked as a journalist and
business consultant as well as for the Conservative Party.
Baroness Finlay of Llandaff (crossbench)
Baroness Finlay played a vital role in the APPG Inquiry into access to Parkinson's
services.
Since becoming a member of the House of Lords in 2001, she has
been active on a wide range of health issues.
A professor of Palliative Medicine at the Cardiff University
School of Medicine, Baroness Finlay has held a number of
influential positions including President of the Royal Society of
Medicine.
Treasurer
Duncan Hames MP (Liberal Democrat)
Duncan is the newly elected MP for Chippenham. He has already
raised with ministers issues relating to the welfare system and
health services for people with Parkinson's.
He has also run a half marathon to raise funds for Parkinson's
UK. Duncan previously worked as a business consultant and is a
former district councillor.
Secretaries
Madeleine Moon MP (Labour)
Madeleine has raised Parkinson's issues with ministers on a
number of occasions, as well as taking part in the APPG Inquiry. She also serves as a member of the
Defence Select Committee.
Before entering Parliament, Madeleine was a County Borough and
Borough Councillor for 14 years and was twice Mayor of
Porthcawl.
During her 30-year career in health and social care, Madeleine
often worked with people with Parkinson's.
Lord Brooke of Sutton Mandeville (Conservative)
Lord Brooke played an important role in the APPG Inquiry. He has been a member of the Lords
since 2001, before which he served as MP for Cities of London and
Westminster.
Lord Brooke is a former Cabinet Minister and Chairman of the
Conservative Party. His father, former Home Secretary Baron Brooke
of Cumnor, had Parkinson's.

The group's remit
- Keeping Parkinson's on the political agenda
- Investigating, monitoring, reporting on and providing a forum
for discussion
- Exerting pressure on issues relating to the implementation of
relevant Government initiatives, with the ultimate goal of ensuring
equal access to recommended and appropriate health and social
services to all people with Parkinson's and their carers
- Providing regular briefings to parliamentarians in order to
ensure awareness of the needs of people with Parkinson's and their
carers
- Ensuring policy-making is evidence-based and focused around the
needs of service users
- Liaising with members of the devolved administrations within
the UK in order to share best practice
Inquiry report into access to Parkinson's services
In July
2009, the APPG published a report into access to health and social
care services for people affected by Parkinson's.

services today' reveals major inequalities in access to
information and services for people with Parkinson's and their
families.
