Advanced Course: Multidisciplinary Team Management of Parkinson’s Disease (NCORE)

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is aimed at all grades of Allied Health Professionals (AHP) and nurses who have some experience of treating people with Parkinson’s and may have previously attended the Derby Parkinson’s Courses e.g. NCORE Multidisciplinary Management of Parkinson’s or other relevant training.

What will the course cover?

The programme will cover management at each of the 4 stages of Parkinson’s – Diagnosis, Maintenance, Complex and Palliative, with emphasis on the latter 2 stages and covering the impact of hospitalisation on people with Parkinson’s. It will also cover the principles of multidisciplinary team (MDT) working including integrating an understanding of emotion, behaviour and cognition into MDT working. Motor and non-motor symptoms will be covered and principles of therapeutic management for different AHP disciplines. Each session will be led by a clinical specialist in the field of Parkinson’s.

What will you learn?

• Gain understanding of problems and management at each of the 4 stages, with emphasis on Complex and Palliative stages
• Gain an understanding of multidisciplinary team working in Parkinson’s, incorporating an understanding of emotion, behaviour and cognition
• Understand the impact and implications of hospitalisation on people with Parkinson’s
• Increase knowledge of impact and management of motor and non-motor symptoms
• To gain knowledge of the best practice and current evidence-based therapy management of Parkinson’s Disease, including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech & Language Therapy
