Race The Moon is the new global fundraising event bringing the Parkinson's community together. Join the exercise mission to collectively travel the 1.5 million miles of the lunar cycle, and raise funds for charities Parkinson’s UK and Cure Parkinson’s.
Sport Parkinson’s is inviting people across the world to take part in exercise or activity once a day for a month from April 12, to collectively travel the 1.5 million miles of the lunar cycle.
Run, ride, swim, walk. Participants decide what activity they’d like to do. And all abilities are welcome.
Money raised will help fund activities, expand existing programmes, pay for instructors and develop innovative pilot projects to roll out across the Parkinson's community.
Sport Parkinson’s launched in November 2020. The organisation hopes to raise £175,000 for Parkinson's UK. It was founded by duo Charlie Appleyard and Garen Williams who are both living with Parkinson’s.
Charlie Appleyard, Co-Founder and Director at Sport Parkinson’s, said:
"We are very excited to be launching the 'Race The Moon’ event to raise vital funds for the Parkinson’s community. The money we raise will be spent on inclusive subsidised sport and exercise for people with Parkinson’s, as exercise is shown to slow the progression of Parkinson’s and research focussed on finding a cure for this condition.
"We are encouraging everyone to become a ‘Race The Moon Challenger’ and set their own mission objective. What is unique about this event is that everyone’s efforts will go towards our mission target of travelling 1.5 million miles.
"You can carry out any activity - no matter how big or small - and clock miles. The focus is not on how fast or how far individuals can go, but one where everyone's contribution is valued and recognised.
"We want to encourage everyone to unite and race as one and use the time to discover new and different sports and activities, as part of the event.
"For every mile that people move during the 28 days of the challenge, we will edge closer to achieving our mission."
Ghalib Ullah, Head of Commercial Partnerships at Parkinson’s UK, said:
"We are thrilled to see this extraordinarily unique event kick off in April when we celebrate World Parkinson’s Day. With the tough challenges we’ve been facing in the last year, this is an incredible opportunity to bring the Parkinson’s community together virtually.
"We hope everyone can get behind Race The Moon so that individuals can connect with others and share their progress as they take on their personal challenge.
"We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone unite and are grateful for their efforts which will help us to support the Parkinson’s community by setting up vital inclusive sport and physical activity classes across the UK."
