Parkinson's Awareness Week 2011 in the media

We've had over 500 items of media coverage relating to Parkinson's Awareness Week (11-17 April 2011).

Here's a selection.

National media

The week got off to a great start with a double-page spread (pages 18 and 19) about Parkinson's in The Metro on Monday. One of the articles featured John Crossley-Stanbury, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's aged 22.

There was a feature on Parkinson's on the Boots WebMD patient health news website, with a link from their homepage.

Mature Times reported on our new research study, Predict PD, encouraging silver surfers without Parkinson's to join us and get involved.

Third Sector ran the story about our volunteering and fundraising survey, linked to awareness week.

50 Connect featured Parkinson's Awareness Week as a top story from their homepage.

ITV's Lorraine featured Parkinson's on Wednesday's show. Nicky Pywell, who's 35 with 4 children, talked to Dr Hilary Jones about life with Parkinson's.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland media

The Scotsman and over 50 local Scottish newspapers ran a story about Parkinson's Awareness Week linked to a new survey about the number of people who are willing to get involved in charity activities.

This story was also picked up by Wales Online and other local papers in Wales.

The BBC Wales Charity Message for April 2011 is on behalf of Parkinson's UK, with several television features scheduled across BBC1 and BBC2 Wales during Parkinson's Awareness Week.

Regional media

A host of regional coverage has come through, including:

Steve Ford, our chief executive, and Claire Bale from our research team, gave a series of radio interviews about Parkinson's Awareness Week and the new Predict PD research study. They appeared on a variety of regional radio stations, including:

  • BBC Nottingham
  • BBC Somerset
  • BBC Wales
  • KMFM

Sun FM in the North East of England interviewed Steve Ford, our chief executive, as well as Barry Martin from Sunderland, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's 11 years ago at the age of 45.

John St. John Mosse was featured in the Wimbledon Guardian talking about his training for taking on our Trek Kilimanjaro challenge event later this year.

Frank Thompson, who has Parkinson's, appeared in The Shields Gazette in a long article encouraging people to join us. Frank is chair of our Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Active Persons' Branch.

Roddy Lee, one of our active members and fundraisers in the Eastern England region was interviewed at length on BBC Three Counties Radio on Monday.

ITV Meridian Tonight ran an item about Parkinson's on Tuesday. It featured Tony Potter, who has Parkinson's, as well as Fell Duncan from our South East regional team and Parkinson's UK-funded researcher Dr Richard Wade-Martins.

Garth Ravenhill, who's 39 and has Parkinson's, featured in an article in The Norwich Advertiser.  

Healthcare media

We've had features about Parkinson's and Parkinson's Awareness Week in healthcare media, including the British Journal of Healthcare Assistants.

In addition, NHS Online, a website aimed at healthcare professionals, published an in-depth article on Parkinson’s.
