Maura's 50th birthday party
Maura Thompson decided to hold a Party for Parkinson's for her
50th birthday.
My father had Parkinson's for 18
years, until he passed away in January 2010. The challenges he
faced made me determined to raise funds to find a cure.
I wanted a big party for my 50th, inviting friends scattered far
and wide, so thought it would be the perfect opportunity.
Held in my local village hall, it was lovely to see so many of
my oldest friends and family, some who had come all the way from
Johannesburg.
There was a hog roast and lovely salads (born in Zimbabwe I
wanted food cooked outside like the old days!).
Even an old fashioned
ice-cream van which everyone thought this was brilliant!
A performer sang 70s and 80s hits, such as ABBA, and we all sang
along at the top of our voices!
I put together a hamper from donated prizes and displayed this
with posters and literature about Parkinson's. I hoped this would
be informative and help with raffle ticket sales.
Furthermore, I was fortunate enough to be in touch with our
local Parkinson's UK information and
support worker, who very kindly spoke about the work of the
charity and how donations make a difference.
After receiving donations in lieu of gifts and with raffle
ticket sales, we raised a total of £941 - a complete success! I was
over the moon and so happy that these funds would support research.
My dream weekend had come true.
I would encourage anyone with an interest to have a Party for
Parkinson's. Do something fun and people will always help and
support you!
If you've been inspired to hold your own party, why not
request a pack and start planning!
