Parkinson's UK supporters David and Jean Robey, from Harrogate,
have held garden parties for a number of years. Here are their
- Garden parties are a very
enjoyable way of raising funds and awareness.
- It's easy and informal so
appeals to people with Parkinson's and their friends.
- Having said that, nothing happens, however
low key without organisation and effort!
- Family and friends are particularly
helpful and don't be afraid to match a person to a job.
You just have to ask.
- The money making depends on getting people to
come - send invitations out and make
announcements at local group meetings you attend.
- Chat to people who need a little
encouragement - this usually seems to work. We're often asked 'when
is the garden party this year'.
- The food needs to be simple
and look appetising, with plenty of tea.
- It pays off to have good raffle
prizes eg gifts from local trades people, plants,
wine, restaurant vouchers, and sell tickets around the
