If Jean and David can do it so can you!

Parkinson's UK supporters David and Jean Robey, from Harrogate, have held garden parties for a number of years. Here are their tips:

  • Garden parties are a very enjoyable way of raising funds and awareness.
  • It's easy and informal so appeals to people with Parkinson's and their friends.
  • Having said that, nothing happens, however low key without organisation and effort!
  • Family and friends are particularly helpful and don't be afraid to match a person to a job. You just have to ask.
  • Jean RobeyThe money making depends on getting people to come - send invitations out and make announcements at local group meetings you attend.
  • Chat to people who need a little encouragement - this usually seems to work. We're often asked 'when is the garden party this year'.
  • The food needs to be simple and look appetising, with plenty of tea.
  • It pays off to have good raffle prizes eg gifts from local trades people, plants, wine, restaurant vouchers, and sell tickets around the tables.
  • Our target number is 150 people but usually exceeds that.
