The Parkinson's Disease Society offers a number of different
grant types to support research into Parkinson's disease.
While we only fund projects that are carried out at a UK
institution, there is also provision for the support of
international research collaborations and the exchange of research
staff. Funds are only provided for research directly related to
Parkinson's disease.
There are a number of different research grant types
available:
- Project Grant Scheme
- Innovation Grants
- Career Development Awards
- PhD Studentship Scheme
- Themed Research
Project Grant Scheme
The project grant scheme is the key research funding scheme
operated by the Parkinson's Disease Society.
The studies supported by a Project Grant are designed to answer
a single question or a small group of related questions about
Parkinson's. Applications are invited for project grants of up to 3
years. Advertisements for the submission of applications are placed
twice per year, with deadlines for submission in April and
September.

Innovation Grants
Innovation Grants support exceptionally innovative research
focused on the causes, treatment and the search for a cure for
Parkinson's.
The scheme funds high-risk, high-reward research that tests new
and unconventional hypotheses.
Research proposals should tackle major scientific or technical
hurdles in the field of Parkinson's. If successful, they could
generate breakthrough discoveries that significantly impact the
lives of people with Parkinson's.

Grants
The aim of this initiative is to support individuals who wish to
specialise in Parkinson's disease research, either by establishing
their own research group (Senior Research Fellowship) or by
undertaking relevant research training (Training Fellowship).

PhD Studentship Scheme
As part of our ongoing commitment to build research capacity
related to Parkinson's, the Parkinson's Disease Society is offering
fully funded PhD Studentships for outstanding students.

Themed Research
At present, the majority of the research funded by the Society
has been proposed by the researchers who carry out the work.
However, following the identification of the key areas contained
within the Research Agenda, the Society will invite applications
from groups to carry out studies that will address specific
research questions.
Suggestions for such studies can be submitted to the Director of
Research and Development, usually in June, who will assess them to
ensure that they address at least one of the Society's research
priority areas. The potential research topics will then be
presented to the Board of Trustees for their approval. The research
community will then be invited to tender applications to carry out
these specific pieces of research. As with the other funding
schemes, these applications will also be stringently reviewed to
ensure that they are of the highest quality and that they
appropriately address the research question.
