SPLENDOR in the Grass... Gulliver's People

I've had this song in my head all my life and only just found it on Youtube...never knew who sang it. Struck a chord with me at the time due to grassy encounter with paper boy. (I'll probably get struck off for that naughty reference.}

Just listening to it now,I didn't know that one.

Tee hee, the track that it makes me think of I'd better not put at the moment, it might get us both thrown off here! LOL smile

I'll think of something else and get back to you, it does look as though we've got this section to ourselves doesn't it!

IN THE Summertime - Mungo Jerry

Many years ago, my husband, who was at that time my boyfriend, went to his friends 21st birthday party (unfortunately without me because I wasn't well) and this band were playing there, it was just before this record was released. Apparently, I missed a great party! frown

Anyone remember anything about the Lovin' Spoonful apart from John Sebastian?

Yes, I too saw Mungo Jerry just before "In The Summertime" was released. It was at a two-day open air music festival, possibly at Newcastle-Under-Lyne. There were loads of bands on over the weekend, with Ginger Baker's Airforce headlining.

But the whole thing was taken over by Mungo Jerry playing what they called "Jug Band Music". From what I remember thay just had a small slot on the first day, but were so popular they were pulled back for an extra session on the second day. No-one had ever heard of them before and they stole the show, playing "In The Summertime" loads of times.

It was in the middle of summer, and very hot and sunny. The crowd were just lying round this field being happy - probably about 50,000 of us. Magic! In those days there were festivals like that all over the country every couple of weeks in summer and never any trouble.

It all went wrong at the Isle of Wight when a large contingent turned up late without tickets and demanded to be let in free. They started pulling down the fences and with very few security people and a crowd of 600,000 the organisers had to declare it a free festival, which obviously upset the original people who had paid up front.

Then many of the acts, especially the big names from the US, started worrying that the organisers wouldn't now have the money to pay them, and some refused to go on stage unless they were paid in full in advance, in cash. Joni Mitchell was actually on stage and refusing to continue without her £££ and Tiny Tim (remember him?) was backing her up. Meanwhile the less capitalist bands from the UK were offering to perform for half their fees, or for free in some cases. It was a right shambles, and more or less marked the end of the outdoor festival, and the end of the age of innocence. I recall John Sebastian just sitting through it all, stoned and with a smile and glazed eyes. He was probably a thousand mils away somewhere - in his head, anyway.

Have just bought 17 yr old daughter T in the park ticket. I am very proud that we are a rocking family. Music is very important to all of us, everyone has their fave. A life w/out music: my definition of a nightmare.
