Is number 9 not a politician or military but perhaps inventor/scientist/engineer who made a terrible mistake?
Can't think of a really big one.

You're on the right track, Mosie. 3 mistakes actually.

9. Who was “the one human responsible for more deaths than any other in history”?
Clue: A citizen of the USA.

I was going to say him, but had forgot his name. Its a bit unfair though, may as well blame Henry Ford for all the subsequent road deaths.

two other contenders (this question has got me dander up)
- marco polo for bringing gunpowder back to europe
- christopher columbus for wiping out 90% of the population of the americas with new diseases AND bringing syphilus back to europe.
Surely Chris Columbus wins hands down!
to america
bubonic plague
chicken pox
cholera
common cold
influenza
leprosy
malaria
measles
pertussis
scarlet fever
smallpox
typhoid
typhus
yellow fever
yaws
from america
bejel
Chagas disease
pinta
syphilis
plus the introduction of tobacco (5 million deaths per year) and cocaine.
the indigenous population of brazil went from 4 million to 300,000.

MIDGELY is indeed the man.
His 3 areas of expertise were:
1. LEAD in petrol. By the time it was being globally distributed Midgely already knew how destructive it was, and would become, and went to great measures to keep the facts from public/media scrutiny.
2. CFCs in refrigeration and airconditioning units. Bad news for green warriors and ozone layers.
3. By far the best. After becoming extremely ill from lead poisoning and CFCs, Midgely became bedbound. So he invented a complicated contraption comprising numerous ropes and pulleys to assist his medics and kinfolk in getting him out of, and back into, bed. Unfortunately it all went awry one day, and in the subsequent entanglement it strangled him to death.
