In this Diamond Jubilee year I was wondering how much support there is for the monarchy. Personally I love all the pomp and circumstance of great state occasions like coronations, jubilees and royal weddings. I think this country would be all the poorer with a president running the show. To be able to look back on over a thousand years of history and tradition is quite something and makes us the envy of the world.
To all forum members outside the UK, what do you think of the Queen?

i have always been an extremist republican and hate the monarchy with a vengence but i wouldnt want to get rid of them as there would be nothing to be an extremist etc etc. its more fun being against the royal family than for some awful president like boris johnson or bruce forsyth. so long live the queen damn her and her progeny!

Thats a bit extreme, but your entitled to your view, i just wonder why you feel so vengefull ?
I'm proud to say I'm the complete opposite and hold the current Queen in very high regard and genuinely feel the United Kingdom is all the better for having a monarchy than not.
Having said that I do accept that there are some members of the royal family who lack some forethought in their behaviour and attitude, but is'nt this the same case in any other large family ?
I attended the last jubilee celebrations and witnessed huge outpourings of love and respect amongst the hundreds of thousands who came from far and wide and took the trouble to be there, and I hope to be at this years celebrations too, health permitting.
I've dined in a royal residence, met quite a few of them, shook hands with some, and even went to the Queen mums funeral after which I appeared on BBC TV news saying "A Grand send off for a Grand old lady"..... and I meant it.
My one regret was that HRH Princes Diana never got the chance to be queen, I think she would've helped to move the monarchy into a more modernistic way of life ?
God save the Queen

Can't help feeling that at the beginning of the 21st century involving an hereditary monarchy in the government of a supposed advanced democracy is just silly.

no one can say if the Royal Family are value for money, because, no one knows how much they cost and no one knows how much they bring in.
From a political point of view, they are a complete anachronism.
I feel that its time for a constitution thats been hammered out in front of the media and fairly voted on.

"I feel that its time for a constitution thats been hammered out in front of the media and fairly voted on. "
.......bear in mind that It was largely the media that caused the death of HRH Princess Diana.
Whatever the cost of having a monarchy, in the uk its undoubtedly true that the traditions and pagentry are widely envied by other countries, the boost in tourism alone and the money brought with it goes a long way to justify their existence.
Then there is the Princes Trust, who could possibly deny that is a waste of time?
All things considered we're still better of with a monarchy than without it.
To be honest and balanced i dont care much for the current heir to the throne and his .....ermmm ...cough...wife, but when William and Kate take on the mantle I believe the monarchy will rapidly move forward with the times and there will be less talk regarding republicism

Strange that you should mention "The Peoples Princess." One of the most disgraceful scandals of modern times.
I see you toe the line with Charles and Camilla. A great mistake, shes one of the most presentable people I ever saw.
William and Kate?
well, hes too dim to do anything but what hes told, and Kate is from good mining stock.
No problem there.
