I seem to remember that on the old Forum there was a thread on a feeling of a lump of phlegm in the throat which was the result of lack of swallowing adequately. Can anybody remember it and more importantly the advice given. Thanks Barbara

Hi

I am experiencing mucus at the back of my throat. I have been told to drink more and to suck a sweet if required. I am also seeing my doctor on Monday who is supposed to prescribe me a mild anti-depressent tablet which dries up your throat and alleviate the symptoms - you will need to drink more with this too.

It is a real nuisance and it has caused me to be sick many times.

I hope this helps.

Thanks. So far I have suggested John suck fruit gums because of the glycerine and chew gum.The only problems are 1)chewing gum looks ghastly and anti social.2)Searching out the xylitol gum so his teeth are not ruined.

Thanks for posting, I keep feeling I've not swallowed tabs properly and got one stuck in my throat, keep coughing to try and dislodge it, drink loads of water, tried dry bread hoping that would move it on. Now after reading your posts realise it's another symptom rearing it's head. This PD's got a lot to answer for, I'm a bit scared that one day my swallow will be really affected, worry about choking to death, does anyone else have this fear or am I being too paranoid? Trying hard not to dwell on things too much but every now and then these worries pop into my head and I have some down time.

Hi Dolly,You cannot worry about what might or might not happen in the future A person could think themselves fit and healthy and die suddenly as my father did at 54.Having P.D is unpleasant in the extreme but it is not making it better by worrying about what might happen. It might not.I sympathise as I am a terrible worrier.I try now to follow my husbands philosophy and enjoy today and not even think about the negatives only the positives.
John has been having tablets with something to help them down for a long time.Fruit gums sucked now and again work a treat as they seem to lubricate things. Have to see if I can find something that is not sugary because of the teeth. Chewing gum does not help.I presume the problem is the result of reduced swallowing causing the throat to become dry as much as muscles not working in an orderly fashion when actually swallowing..

Hello Dolly
I have had a problem with swallowing and excessive saliva for some time now.
As I also have trouble with my speech,so the speech therapist comes to see me from time to time,
Monday the 30th she is coming when I have my lunch,to assess my swallowing.
I have found ,it is easier to swallow brn bread rather than white, and not to eat rice or dry meat like chicken or turkey, the later being the most difficult as that has been the only meat I have eaten for years.
I don't let this worry me,it just has to be a way of life.
However,I think you should ask your PD nurse to refer you to a speech therapist

Dolly,I know exactly what you mean.If anyone is late home I have their funeral planned and what we will eat afterwards.Always the practical one!!!!!!Been like this all my adult life.Probably, the result of both parents dying during my teens, one dropping in front of me.As I said I try now to live by John's philosophy. How does the song go? "Accentuate the positive."

Is there anyone out there that has this mucus issue and can't stop coughing, especially when you eat. My throat feels extremely dry sometimes too.

It is making me sick each day and of course it is getting me down. I am struggling tonight. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have been sleeping on the sofa for the past 2 weeks as I cannot lay flat.

My doctor put me on a low dose antidepressant (the name slips my mind but it begins with the letter "A"). This was supposed to dry up the mucus but it has made it worse.

I'm really fed up with this.
