Hi newly diagnosed with PD in November 2010, aged 40. I have just realised that I now bruise very easily, I am on Ropinerol 4mg x 3 daily along with depression tablets and wee wee tablets, which have helpa bit,now can get to the loo wthout shoving everyone out of the way. I bruise so much easier now than before. Also cannot shift any weight, causing me to feel more down and seem to be increasing weight, not having changed my diet, Help with any advise welcomed. Thanks Jen

Hi Jen and welcome to the forum. I, like you bruise very easily now but I'm not sure if it is because of PD, the cocktail of drugs or a mixture of both. I can't offer any advice I'm afraid except perhaps we should give up kick boxing!!!

I hope you find the forum a place to get help and avice from those who know how and what you are feeling. Keep posting and why not join us in the Cafe #9 for general chit chat and a cyber cup of tea.

Hope to see you around

hello jen & welcome. I too bruise easily. I did have an information leaflet about it, but for the life of me can't find it. I promise to keep looking & will let you know.
As far as I remember some medicines do cause this - blood thining ones. I don't think Ropinerole( which is one of the PD drugs I take) is a culprit. Aging is a cause as the skin gets thinner, but at 40 I wouldn't worry about this! I think that in my case a lot of the unexpected bruising that I notice are the result of stumbles & tumbles that don't hurt so I forget about them
Some medications can cause weight gain - some antidepressants, but I don't know if this is because they increase appetite, slow your metabolism or decrease nervous enery loss.
Could your weight gain be due to water retention?
I am afraid I am not helping much. Please do not take my comments as gospel, I am relying on memory! Hopefully some kind soul will correct anything that might be misleading.
If you are concerned, may I suggest that you talk with your GP, practice nurse or PD nurse?
Best wishes

Hi Jen 521394

I was diagnosed in September 2009 – I am 52. I am on Requip XL (Ropinirole) 10 mg and I too have put on a lot of weight. I am blaming it on 4 things:
1)Overeating due to depression (having Pd does tend to make you depressed!)
2)Going through the menopause
3)Ropinirole - it does seem to make me more hungry and is associated with weight gain
4)Lack of exercise
I have now stopped overeating but haven’t lost any weight as yet. I have started to cycle to work again and this has improved my walking and typing. My advice is to keep as busy and active as you can. Don't think about the future - live for today.
Regarding the bruising I don’t seem to bruise more easily than before so can't help you there.

Best wishes.

I have great problems with walking and particularly freezing when at home. My husband has greatly helped me by putting strips of masking tape on the floor throughout our home at regualar intervals to facilitate a better stride pattern for me. Although it doesnt look that good and is particularly amusing to see the reaction of visitors, it has been truly amazing as my freezing episodes have improved I would say by 75%. It's been wonderful to think that such a simple idea could be so effective. When we go out, I tend to have a freezing episode getting into and out of lifts, to try and remedy this my husband puts his foot out in front of me and I simply step over it - this has proved to be highly effective too. Hope this helps you. Love SueW xx
