I was diagnosed with PD 6years ago, I am 58. About 2 years ago I started having problems with losing my balance. I keep wanting to go forward, my body tries to compensate resulting in a terrible gait that is almost s shaped and lower back ache.
I have just started to freeze when trying to go forwards
Any ideas?
thanks

Do you have a wii machine? I've had pd for 10 years and have found the balance exercises on the Wii Fit programme very helpful. Failing that, have you been assigned a physiotherapist by your GP? The Parkinsons UK booklet and video (both called Keep Moving) also give good tips. Wishing you well, Mary smile

I have been wondering about wobble boards (a disc that is flat on the top and has a hemispherical extrusion on the bottom. The idea is to stand on them and not fall off, I think - possibly there might be advanced exercises as well!). They seem to be inexpensive.

I also suspect that yoga - which I do indulge in - is useful. It focuses on core strength and flexibility, but there are balance aspects too.

Personally, my balance issues are as yet minor, although I am noticing that my balance isn't as it should be. I'm 40 and my diagnosis was confirmed a little over a year ago; I'm still very much in the early stages, so I cannot offer much in the way of experience, just ideas.

Wishing you all the best,
Amanda aka Zalamanda
