Wales manifesto 2011

Wales Manifesto 2011Our Wales manifesto says what we want the new Welsh Government to do for people affected by Parkinson's.

Elections were held in Wales in May 2011.

Pledge 1: Everyone affected by Parkinson's in Wales should have timely access to the right health and social care including a Parkinson's nurse

Access to Parkinson's nurses is the top campaign priority for people with Parkinson's in Wales.

Parkinson's nurses provide expert advice and support to people with Parkinson's and their carers. There are not enough nurses in Wales to meet the recommended ratio of 1 nurse for every 300 patients.

We're asking the Welsh Government to:

  • make sure that Health Boards provide increased and continued support for Parkinson's nurses
  • make sure that people affected by Parkinson’s get quality care that meets national standards

Pledge 2: People with Parkinson's should be able to get the medication they need, when they need it

In a survey of people with Parkinson's, nearly two-thirds didn't get their medication on time in hospital.

When people with Parkinson's don’t get their medication on time their symptoms become uncontrolled.

This can result in extended hospital stays, more A&E admissions, increased visits to GPs and even unnecessary admissions to care homes.

We're asking the Welsh Government to:

  • make sure that Health Boards and local authorities support people with Parkinson’s to get their medication on time, every time, in hospital and at home
  • make sure that people with complex Parkinson’s have access to the medication they need
  • make sure that prescriptions in Wales continue to be free

Pledge 3: All staff involved in managing care for people with Parkinson's should have a good understanding of the condition

All professionals involved in the care of people with Parkinson's should have training about Parkinson's.

Improving knowledge and understanding of Parkinson's among health and social care professionals is one of the top 5 campaign priorities of people with Parkinson’s and carers living in Wales.

We're asking the Welsh Government to make sure that:

  • Health Boards support the ongoing development of all GP practice staff by promoting access to education and training on Parkinson's
  • workforce planning and development includes information on, and access to, education and training on Parkinson's
