Well done to our Colne Valley Walkers
Well done to our 68 supporters who helped us launch Parkinson's Awareness Week in our 2012 Colne Valley Park Walk on Sunday 15 April!
With large families to solo walking devotees, and a 7 month old
puppy, the walk was a great success, raising over £10,000 for our
search to find a cure.
Family raises thousands by walking Oxford
On Sunday 27
November 2011, Oxford City centre played host the first Oxford
Walk, organised by the South of England
regional team.
Martin Tims, a member of the Oxford
branch, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's 11 years ago, was part of a big
family team – the 'Tims Tribe', pictured right. Martin said:
"It was a great opportunity to see my family and show them the
beauty of the city where I live, whilst increasing awareness of
Parkinson's and raising much needed funds for support and research into a cure. "
The family team walked 6.5 miles around the city
centre and, between them, raised over £2,000. To sponsor Martin and
the Tims Tribe, and to help raise vital funds visit www.justgiving.com/martintims.
Amazing and inspiring Field Gun Run in Portsmouth
As part of Armed Forces Weekend on 25-26 June 2011, the
Portsmouth Field
Gun Association and our very own Portsmouth Working Age Support Group carried
out a Royal Navy Field Gun display run at Portsmouth Historic
Dockyard.
Nige Ayling, Chair of the support group, who has Parkinson's, used to be in the Royal
Navy and came up with the unusual and ambitious idea of
getting a team of people together to take part in a Field Gun
Run.
Our team completed 4 runs with the Field Gun – as the below
video shows, it's no easy task. Although many of Nige's ex-comrades
were on hand to help where needed, the core team consisted of many
people with Parkinson's and their carers.
As the first civilian team to do a Field Gun Run, their
determination proves the statement that "we can beat it!".

Parkinson's nurses
We have
10 full time, and 3 part time Parkinson's nurses in our
region.
We're currently working with consultants and PCT commissioners
in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Southampton formulating a
business plan to support the case for
additional Parkinson's nurses.
Parkinson's UK is currently funding specialist nurse posts in
the South region in West Berkshire
Community Hospital and East Berkshire, St Mark's Day Hospital.
