VAT free on bikes?

I am going to buy a recumbent trike with a motor because I am struggling to cope on my 2wheeled bike.

I have been told that I can buy it VAT free.

Is this correct?

Has anyone any experience of recumbent trikes?

Hi mandybike
Sorry no one has responded yet.

I passed the question to our helpline team to see if they could offer some help. Here's what they said:

If you’re disabled or have a long-term illness, you shouldn’t be charged VAT on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use. such as building works, specialist furniture, aids and equipment. You also shouldn't be charged VAT on:

  • the installation and any extra work needed as part of this,
  • repairs or maintenance,
  • spare parts or accessories.

Both the product and your disability have to meet certain criteria to qualify for the VAT exemption.

To claim the exemption, submit a declaration to the supplier/s of the goods. For more information, visit the gov.uk website or contact the VAT helpline on 0300 123 1073.

You may also be able to get specialist help from Wheels for Wellbeing on 020 7346 8482.

I hope this helps,

Ezinda

VAT free bikes, or even upgrades/components would be great,  but the way I read it, there's no way bikes (or bike bits) are included in the categories... has anyone tried and had any success, and if so, please give details.
