Occupations

We were wondering if any research had been done on the occupations of Parkinsons sufferers? Is there a type of job that is more prevalent? Also is there research on hereditary factors? Thanks

There's this http://archneur.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=797977 but the conclusion is related to toxicant exposure rather than occupation per se. In any case http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3299410/ is contradictory.

And even if there is support for an environmental component, there must be genetic factors that are to blame as well, so fingering occupation alone is not possible.

Peejay.  Epidemiological studies of a complex condition like Parkinson's is notoriously difficult. To establish a causal link with any degree of certainty typically involves hundreds, if not thousands of individuals and take many years. Studies seem to suggest that people working with industrial solvents and pesticides may be more prone to the condition but this is by no means conclusive. There was an article about this in the Parkinsons UK research magazine a while back. You might be able to request a copy.

I have just discovered that the summer 2013 edition, which contains the article, is available to download.

Thank you
