Sending a message to another user

You can send a message to other registered users from the forum if they have elected to receive private messages. Messages are sent through a form on the website and are be delivered to the email address the user supplied at registration. Replies to messages sent through the forum are sent as regular emails.

1.  Appropriate use of the messaging function

The same rules regarding etiquette in the forum should apply to private messaging.

We do not recommend that you disclose personal information in private messages.

Please be aware that if you exchange private emails with another forum user, Parkinson's UK will not be able to view or access these, and they will not be moderated. 

If you think someone is using the email system inappropriately please contact the forum moderator on forum@parkinsons.org.uk

Abuse of the messaging system will not be tolerated.

Parkinson's UK is in no way liable for any emails sent through private messaging.

2. Opting in and out of messaging

If you wish to receive emails from other forum users you must update your account settings. By default, forum user accounts are set to not receive private messages through the forum. You can change your preferences at any time.

To change your settings:

• Log into the forum.
  
• Click on the My account link on the left of the page.
  
• Change the option 'Allow forum users to message me privately?' from No to Yes.
  
• Ensure the email address you have provided here is the you want to use for messaging.
  
• Submit your changes.

3. Sending a message from the forum

To send a message to another user:

• Click on the Send message link beside their forum username when viewing a message the user has posted.
  
• A form will be displayed if the user has elected to receive messages. If they have opted out of messaging, the following text will be displayed: This user has chosen not to receive private messages.
  
• Type your message into the form and click the Send button.
  
• The message will now be delivered to the recipient's email address.
  
• Note that your email address will be visible to the recipient, and any replies to your message will be sent to you as a regular email.

IMPORTANT	Be aware that if you choose to send a message to another forum user you will be sharing your email address with them. This applies even if you have set your messaging preferences to 'NO'. To ensure you NEVER receive a personal message from the forum you must also never send any.

4. Receiving messages

Messages sent from the forum will arrive in your email box headed Private message from [username] at Parkinson's UK Forum.

The sender's email address will also be visible.

If you reply to this message, your response will be sent to the sender's email address as a regular email.
