Parkinson's resources for GPs

StethoscopeWe recognise the critical role general practitioners (GPs) play in the diagnosis and overall primary care of Parkinson's.

Online training modules for GPs

We have partnered with BMJ Learning to produce the following online training modules for GPs.

Parkinson's disease - initial assessment and referral

An interactive and multimedia module on how best to have an appropriate level of suspicion for Parkinson's and to know when and how to refer when you do suspect it.

Parkinson's is common and causes considerable morbidity. It can also have a markedly adverse effect on a patient's quality of life and also on the lives of relatives and carers.

Diagnosis is often delayed or incorrect. This can result in the patient receiving inappropriate treatment or no treatment.

After completing this module, you should know:

  • how to take a history and examine a patient with a tremor
  • how to assess a patient with suspected Parkinson's
  • when and how to refer a patient with suspected Parkinson's

Parkinson's disease: non-motor symptoms

An interactive and multimedia module to help GPs with non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's. It looks in detail at how you should manage patients with symptoms such as constipation, pain and depression.

Healthcare professionals have traditionally concentrated on the motor manifestations of Parkinson's. But patients are often more disabled by the non-motor symptoms.

This dichotomy has led to the old adage that 'doctors see Parkinson's as a problem from the neck up, but patients see it as problem from the neck down'.

After completing this module, you should know:the common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's

  • how to diagnose these symptoms
  • how best to treat these symptoms
