Car insurance and Parkinson's
You must advise your insurance company of any change in your
health that may affect your ability to drive.
Shop around for the most competitive cover and obtain a number of quotes.

Failure to do so is an offence under the Road Traffic Act and it
may invalidate your policy.
You must also be sure to inform your insurers about all
adaptations made to the insured vehicle.
Renewing or switching insurance
Insurers will want to know about any disabilities or health
problems, particularly if there are any Driver and Vehicle
Licensing Agency (DVLA) restrictions on your licence.
Insurers are not allowed to refuse car insurance to disabled
drivers or charge extra unless there is significant evidence to
justify the decision.
Any insurance premium has to be based on a reasonable assessment
of risk.
Make sure you get as many quotes as possible and read the small
print carefully before making your final decision.
If you feel that an insurance provider has behaved in an
unreasonable manner or has not acted within the remit of the
Equality Act 2010, complain directly to the insurer.
If the response of the insurance provider is unsatisfactory
contact the Financial Ombudsman
Service.
European holiday motor insurance
Drivers with a valid certificate of motor insurance from a UK
insurer will automatically have the minimum requirements of the
Road Traffic Act in all European
Union countries.
You may want to check that you are covered not only for the
minimum requirements, but also for unlimited personal injury and
property damage caused to others.
For this you will need to apply for a Green Card, which normally
involves a small additional premium.
The
DirectGov website has more information on making an application
for a Green Card.
There is more information about car insurance for people with
Parkinson's in our Driving and Parkinson's
booklet.
