The PDS has put together some helpful hints and tips
for carers of people with Parkinson's:
- Find out about Parkinson’s disease – for example symptoms,
progression, treatments and medication.
- Not all health needs will be to do with
Parkinson’s. It is important not to assume that changes in health
are directly related to the condition.
- Talk to your GP about your own physical and
emotional health. Ask for support – if you don’t ask, professionals
may not realise you need it.
- Find out about relaxation techniques and
complementary therapies if you feel they may help. Your GP may be
able to refer you.
- If you feel it may be helpful, ask your GP
about counselling or emotional support. This may be available free
on the NHS. Private counsellors are also available at
variable cost, and some voluntary organisations offer counselling
at reduced cost.
- Emergencies can happen – try to plan ahead
for peace of mind.
- Find out about, and apply for, the benefits
you are eligible for.
- Try to do something for yourself every
day.
