Parkinson's hospital medicines management audit

This audit has made me realise how important it is for Parkinson's patients to receive their Parkinson's drugs on time.

Ian Bennett, pharmacist

Hospital staff can help make sure people with Parkinson's get their drugs on time in hospital, by carrying out our medicines management audit. This is part of our 'Get it on time' campaign.

National Patient Safety Agency alert

The audit will also help fulfil the requirements in the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) alert on omitted and delayed medicines, which specifically mentions Parkinson's drugs.

Benefits of doing an audit of Parkinson's drugs in hospital

  • Improving quality

Making sure each patient gets their Parkinson's drugs exactly when they need them will mean their treatment works better and they will be home quicker.
  • Improving safety

Having the right hospital procedures in place for managing the drugs of Parkinson's patients reduces the risk of mistakes and complaints.
  • Reducing waste

Good medicines management will mean people get treated quickly and efficiently whilst in hospital. The management of wards will be better.
  • Improving the skills and knowledge of hospital staff

Nurses, doctors and other hospital staff will have an understanding of Parkinson's and they will provide better care.
  • Better experience for the patient

When people feel they have some control over their own drugs and are being listened to, they are being treated with dignity and respect.
